Possible disadvantage, Be sure the vendor allows Terminal access with the software, otherwise while you may be able to get a license, the software may not run due to the way you are connecting to the PC running said software.

I know this question is slightly irrelevant but, why isn't the license dongle in the PC which has the software on it? What you're attempting to do would sort of defeat the purpose of having the dongle to begin with.

If you can "see" the USB dongle in file explorer via remote desktop, then it's likely that software is restricted for "meat space" use only, meaning it might intentionally not work via remote desktop.

If you can't see the USB dongle at all via Remote desktop connection, then there is a group policy restricting that ability (I am not sure where) look into remote desktop policies regarding local USB connected storage devices or local USB connected devices in general.

I would suspect the dongle, upon initial insert, added something to the registry to prevent remote users from using the software. Have you tried from other remote means, such as SplashTop or NinjaOne? Certain enterprise situations would use a hardware KVM system to access a unit, rather than RDP. If money isn't the issue, you could probably get a small Raritan solution.

Actually try the opposite of what others are (incorrectly) suggesting - disable client drive and usb redirection so that the RDP client PC does not map any of it's USB to the remote RDP host. The licence software may look for a usb path that is being redirected.

While not always the case, I do know that some manufacturers specifically forbid this. I've only seen this where the software is either pre-installed on the unit or shipped with the unit, like professional graphics editors.

The thing that kills me here is I get it, they don't want you to buy one license then have everyone remote into that particular machine to grab the license. But seriously how realistic is that? I mean the software we use is pretty specific (energy and mechanical load analysis) Only 1-2 of my team know or need to use the software, typically only every once in a while.oh well it's like the old days when you had to keep the CD in the drive to play the stupid game.
